Nestled away, one street behind the beachfront area of Gurubebila is a restaurant and guesthouse called Sandaru. Family owned and run by the wonderful Kumari and her husband Chamara, Sandaru is loved by locals and tourists alike and is the go too for traditional meals and classes on how to create Sri Lankan meals for when you return home.

Sandaru’s restaurant can cater to up to 20 guests at a time and is a true family experience with both Kumaru and Kumari’s mother along with Chamara involved in food preparation and cooking. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner you will be back on a regular basis.

Breakfast includes options such as pancakes, plain, egg or honey Rotti, omelette, fruit platters or Sri Lankan breakfast options like string hoppers with Dahl, coconut sambol or milk rice with tomato sambol and omelette and more.

A range of smooth bowls can be made for breakfast or lunch and Shawarma with vegetable, chicken, cheese or cheese and chicken also served as a lunch or dinnher option on the menu. The soup range also double for lunch and dinner.

You will love the 7 dish rice and curry meal and many of the traditional rice and noodle dishes, but also take the opportunity to book a day in advance the develed or BBQ fish for couples or large groups.

Kumari and Chamara will hand select the freshest fish direct from the market at a generous size to suit the amount of diners and bake it to perfection with layered flavours that include a light curry or chilly pastes combined with fresh fruits like lemon or lime and pineapple and is a dish and evening you will remember.

A lovely desserts menu and a full drinks range rounds out the menu with fresh fruit juices, Sri Lankan tea and coffee.

Sandaru’s Guesthouse

Most who stay will spend most meal times with Kumari and indulge in the traditional cooking classes that she offers almost daily to guests and other travellers in the village.

Kumari is loved by all and offers affordable rooms offering a variety of options, many single women travelers looking for a deeper connection to the area and the culture of seaside Sri Lanka book Sandaru’s rooms.

Sandaru’s has 5 rooms available all on the ground floor and offering variety for many tourists. Single rooms with double beds for men and women. A larger double bed room accomodating friends traveling together and 2 larger queen sized bedrooms with large ensuites perfect for couples or couples traveling together.

All rooms engage the wonderful garden area that provides cooling shade and also doubles as a fruit and herb garden for the restaurant, you will find chillies, pumpkins, papaya, eggplant, guava, avocado, long beans, ochre, mango, star beans, limes, potatoes, and bananas all growing on site.

Those staying also have the option of utilising Chamara’s Tuk Tuk services at discounted rates. The team can organise transport to and from the airport and tours to local tourist hot spots like Galle, ahungama, Weligama and Marissa. Laundry services are also on-site.
